In popular culture

The song was featured in the film "Billy Madison" (1995).

Kissing to Be Clever is the debut album by New Wave band Culture Club, released in 1982. It was anchored by the international hit "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me", which with its sunny reggae tones and neo-torch song vocals, remains one of Culture Club's signature songs.

Since the demise of the Epic Records edition, the band's first album has been available without the song "Time (Clock of the Heart)" and with the black-and-white drawing pictured here, instead of the original colour photo (in 1996, it was reissued by Disky Communications, this time returning the colour photo, but still missing "Time (Clock of the Heart)"). The remastered 2003 CD edition contains additional tracks (including "Time (Clock of the Heart)", and "Romance Beyond the Alphabet", which is its orchestral instrumental version, also included on Culture Club Collect - 12" Mixes Plus and its subsequent re-release Culture Club Remix Collection as "Time (Clock of the Heart) (Instrumental Mix)") plus the restoration of the original colour cover.

It also features the two first Culture Club singles, "White Boy" and "I'm Afraid of Me" (both were relative flops, making #114 and #100 in the UK Singles Charts in 1982, but then becoming quite popular after the group's first number 1), in slightly different forms. The track "I'll Tumble 4 Ya" was also released in North America, going Top 10 in Canada and the U.S.. "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me" topped the charts in many countries. "Time (Clock of the Heart)" also reached the highest positions of many international charts, and peaked at #2 in the United States.

The album also received a positive review from Rolling Stone magazine.
