Celebration

Song: Celebration
Artist: Madonna
Album: Celebration

Special Sunday Bonus Cast!

Madonna is getting ready to release her THIRD Greatest Hits collection that will be comprised of two discs of hits from her entire career, including two new songs. "Celebration" will be the new single, a heavy dance/trance number that reminds me a bit of Calvin Harris' "I'm Not Alone." I dig it (of course.) It's got another crazy catchy chorus and Madonna's now trademark "where's the/join the party" lyrics. I certainly think this fits her better than the lite-hip-hop of "Hard Candy."

Celebration - "34 Tracks That Changed the World" (I love Madonna's modesty)

Celebration will be the third greatest hits album from American singer Madonna and will be the closing release under her contract with Warner Bros. Records, her record company since 1982. The release will follow her two previous greatest hits albums, The Immaculate Collection (1990) and GHV2 (2001). The title track "Celebration" has been confirmed as the first single from the album.

Background

On March 18, 2009, Madonna's publicist Liz Rosenberg announced the plans for the release of a greatest hits package by September. She also added that Madonna had plans to go to the studio and record new material for the album. The next day, Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, asked fans on his Twitter for input regarding the tracklisting of the greatest hits album. It was later confirmed that she wrote three new tracks for the album, with Paul Oakenfold being confirmed as producer for two of the new songs. Attitude magazine reported in an interview with Oakenfold that the tracks he produced with Madonna are called "Broken (I'm Sorry)" and "Celebrate". He stated that the new music is "lyrically classic Madonna with an edgy modern sound."

Spanish MSN website initially reported that the album was going to be out on September 22, 2009. However, on July 22, 2009, Warner Bros. Records officially announced the release date as September 28, 2009 and confirmed the name of the album asCelebration through Madonna's official website. The compilation will be available in a case of two as well as a single CD. The songs on the album were re-mastered and chosen by Madonna and her fans, and cover the whole expanse of her career. There will also be a DVD released simultaneously also titled "Celebration" which includes Madonna's best videos including several that have never appeared on DVD. The cover for Celebration was created by street pop artist “Mr. Brainwash” who is best known for “throwing modern cultural icons into a blender and turning it up to eleven."

Single Background

On March 2009, Madonna's representative Liz Rosenberg confirmed that she wrote three new tracks for the album, with Paul Oakenfold being confirmed as producer for two of the new songs. Attitude magazine reported in an interview with Oakenfold that the tracks he produced with Madonna are called "Broken", "I'm Sorry" and "Celebrate". He stated that the new music is "lyrically classic Madonna with an edgy modern sound." The song "Celebrate", later renamed as "Celebration", has backing music composed by Ciaran Gribbin, Ian Green and Paul Oakenfold, with lyrics and vocals composed by Madonna. According ot Gribbin, Madonna approached Oakenfold, asking him regarding what he was working on and whether he would be interested to send her some material to note down the lyrics. Oakenfold, alongwith Green and Gribbin had been working on new tracks for Oakenfold's upcoming album. They sent fifteen of those tracks to Madonna. She chose "Broken" and "Celebration" from them. Then Oakenfold, Gribbin and Green arranged the backing track, chord structure as well as added the instrumentation from the guitars, keyboards and drums. Madonna contributed to the track, by composing its melodies.

Warner Bros. Records announced "Celebration" as the lead single from the album. It will be released to radio stations on August 3, 2009, with remixes having been released to dance clubs on July 24, 2009. A world premiere of the Paul Oakenfold 12" Dub version was played on the Pete Tong BBC Radio 1 show on July 24, 2009. Warner Music Germany announced that the release of the German Maxi CD of "Celebration" is on September 11, 2009.

Music structure and lyrics

"Celebration" has been described as a sleek dance-oriented track with influences of previous dance singles by Madonna from the early 90s such as, "Vogue" (1990) and "Deeper and Deeper" (1992). It carries a pumping, house style. Paul Oakenfold described the composition as "lyrically classic Madonna with an edgy modern sound." The lyrics call the the listener to join in a party and celebrate. Influences of europop are found in the song, but not to the extent of previous single, "Hung Up" (2005).According to Los Angeles Times the song has a highly energetic synth-pop groove while referencing 80s Madonna songs. The bridge is in a speak-sing format, where Madonna's voice, consisting a little edge, declares that "I don't recognize you with your clothes on." The lyrics is written in the form of an invitation, which asks one to come and join "the dance of life."

Critical response

Todd Martens from Los Angeles Times commented that "Celebration" works as a throwaway, midsummer dance pop number. However, he felt that the song had modest goals, "at least by Madonna's standards. Even when it gets a bit risque [...] silliness rules the day. She invites us 'to the dance of life,' and coasts over the chorus." He went on to add that the song "is an effective look back, a gliding, reassuring number that she [Madonna] hasn't forgotten her beginning. But rather than instill a sense of nostalgia, everything feels a bit obligatory. The sound of an artist, hopefully, ready for the next chapter." Michael Slezak from Entertainment Weekly called the song "unapologetically dance-y" but felt "disappointed that lyrically, Madonna seems to be revisiting the 'Party! Get on the floor!' theme for the umpteenth time without even the slightest bit of linguistic flair."

Music video

On Madonna's official website, it was reported that a music video was filmed in Milan, Italy, where "die-hard fans" showed up on July 18, 2009 for the filming of segments of fans dancing and "being themselves". A similar shoot took place later in Barcelona. The video was directed by Jonas Ã…kerlund. The Guardian reported that Madonna's daughter Lourdes will appear in the video.

Enjoy.
