Sneaky Sound System is a Sydney-based Australian dance music group consisting of Black Angus (Angus McDonald) (songwriter, producer, guitarist), MC Double D (Daimon Downey) (vocals), Connie Mitchell (vocals, songwriter), Donnie Sloan (bass, keys, co-producer) and Shaun Sibbes (drums).
History
Early Years
Angus and MC Double D met Miss Connie, formerly of the band Primary. Connie contributed vocals for the band's self-titled debut album, Sneaky Sound System.
Angus grew up in Brisbane, Daimon was born in South Africa but grew up in Bellingen, NSW, and Connie Mitchell was born in NZ but grew up in Sydney. Donnie Sloan, the band's bassist, grew up in Adelaide (and also now lives in Sydney) and drummer Shaun Sibbes lives in Perth.
In 2004, Black Angus and MC Double D decided to started their own record label, Whack Recordings. After hooking up with recording engineer/producer Peter Dolso, the band set up a studio in Bondi Beach called "The House of Whack", and set about making their own music. Sneaky Sound System's first release was "Hip Hip Hooray", which quickly gained support from local DJs and radio stations alike, becoming a cult hit.
The band cite Hot Chip and Cut Copy as the inspirations to their sound.
Music Career
2006-2007: Sneaky Sound System
Sneaky Sound System released their self-titled debut album on August 12, 2006 which was produced by band members MC Double D, Black Angus & Peter Dolso. The album made its debut on the charts on January 7, 2008 at number forty-four where it stayed for sixty weeks. When the album received two ARIA Awards in 2007 forBest Dance Release and Breakthrough Artist - Album it pushed to the album's peak at number five. The album was certified x2 platinum later in 2007. In support of the album they did a five date club tour around Australia from September 22 to October 1, 2006 and then supported Robbie Williams on the Australian leg of his Close Encounters Tour during December, 2006.
The album's third single "I Love It" was released on July 8, 2006, debuting on the on the Australian Dance Chart at number five and entering the Australian Top 50 Singles chart at number twenty-five, peaking at number twenty-four. The song broke the record as the longest (70 weeks) charting single on the Australian ARIA charts. The follow-up single "Pictures" peaked at number nineteen on the ARIA Singles Chart and the "Tonite Only" remix at number one on the ARIA Club Chart. "Pictures" came second in the Dance/Electronica category of the 2007 International Songwriting Competition. The fifth single from the album, "UFO", peaked at #11 on the ARIA Singles Chart is currently their highest single peak and the last single off the album, "Goodbye", peaked at number thirty-three and stayed on the charts for only seven weeks.
During November 2007 the band embarked on its first national tour 2007: A Spaced Out Odyssey’ tour. The five date tour began on November 9, 2007 at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre in Brisbane and ended November 17, 2007 at the Hordern Pavilion in Sydney. The tour also included international shows in Auckland,London, Madrid and Barcelona.
2008-present:
At the beginning of 2008 Sneaky Sound System began work on their second album which would be their first album released in the UK. Prior to the album's release they signed to independent UK label 14th Floor Records and began touring the country including Glastonbury, Oxegen and performing on BBC Radio 1. On August 16, 2008 they released 2 which made its debut at number one on the ARIA Albums Chart, becoming their first number one album in Australia. On July 12, 2008 they released the first single from the album "Kansas City". The single made its debut at number sixteen and went on to peak at number 14. Their second single "When We Were Young" on November 15, 2008. The song failed to chart on the ARIA Top 100 singles chart but it peaked at number forty-six on the ARIA Physical Singles chart and number sixteen on the ARIA Dance Chart. The third single from the album "16" which was released on February 14, 2009. As of February 16, the single has charted at number 53 on the ARIA Top 100 Singles Chart and number nine on the ARIA Club Track charts. 4th single It's Not My Problem will be a radio only single.
In the UK they released Pictures as their first single on July 26, 2008. It debuted on the charts at ninety-four and peaked at number seventy-six, staying on the charts for a total of two weeks. their second single to be released their "UFO" made its debut at number fifty-two but then dropping to number ninety-nine. Before the release of their debut album in the UK they released a compilation album on itunes called Sneak Preview - Mixes and Remixes on December 15, 2008. The album has peaked at number forty-two on the itunes Top 50 Electronic Albums chart.
In January 2009 Sneaky Sound System were one of the headline acts at the annual Big Day Out Festival, playing in Auckland, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaideand Perth.
They announced their first headlining UK tour on January 28, 2009 which began on March 8, 2009 in Glasgow and finished on March 11 in London.
On February 17, 2009 they announced their second headlining tour Poptronica Tour. The tour which will go to Australia and New Zealand will commence on April 2,2009 in Brisbane and finish on May 22 in Broome. As of May 22, 2009 they have announced that they will tour for the first time in the US which will commence June 17, 2009 in Miami and conclude on June 26, 2009 in New York and to coincide with the tour they will release a yet to be titled LP during the fall. It was also announced that Sneaky has been nominated for and APRA Award for Dance Work Of The Year for their song "Kansas City". It was announced that Sneaky Sound will feature in Tiesto's next upcoming single I Will Be Here , and support Tiesto at his Victoria Park Concert in London on July 31st
